Epilepsy and Deep Brain Stimulation of Anterior Thalamic Nucleus

چکیده

Presently, at least 60 million people are suffering from epilepsy worldwide. Although multiple pharmacological options for treatment exist, about 30% to 40% of these patients estimated have drug-resistant (DRE), which is associated with severe disability and morbidity. The surgical restricted either open procedures or laser ablations. When a resective option not favorable, then neuromodulation such as vagal nerve stimulation deep brain considered. A relatively recent more commonly used clinical application the (DBS) anterior thalamic nucleus, FDA approval was obtained in 2018. Furthermore, new technological advances DBS technology expected positively impact patients.

Chronic deep brain stimulation of subthalamic and anterior thalamic nuclei for controlling refractory partial epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES Experimental data and case reports of intractable epilepsy patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the internal nuclei suggest a considerable anticonvulsant effect. We intended to describe the results of DBS on subthalamic nuclei and anterior thalamic nuclei (STN and ATN) from our patients and to evaluate the long-term efficiency and safety of DBS for controlling intrac...

Outcome based definition of the anterior thalamic deep brain stimulation target in refractory epilepsy

BACKGROUND Deep brain stimulation of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) is an emerging therapy for refractory focal epilepsy. However, the most optimal target for stimulation has not been unambiguously described. OBJECTIVE In the present study, we investigated the correlation between the stimulation site and outcome in order to define the optimal target for deep brain stimulation in r...

Effects of Anterior Thalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation in Chronic Epileptic Rats

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been investigated for the treatment of epilepsy. In rodents, an increase in the latency for the development of seizures and status epilepticus (SE) has been reported in different animal models but the consequences of delivering stimulation to chronic epileptic animals have not been extensively addressed. We study the effects of anterior thalamic nucleus (AN) sti...

Thalamic Ventral Intermediate Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation for Orthostatic Tremor

BACKGROUND Orthostatic tremor (OT) was first described in 1977. It is characterized by rapid tremor of 13-18 Hz and can be recorded in the lower limbs and trunk muscles. OT remains difficult to treat, although some success has been reported with deep brain stimulation (DBS). CASE REPORT We report a 68-year-old male with OT who did not improve significantly after bilateral thalamic stimulation...
